The OK symbol,
sometimes called the "clamation sign," is probably the most common
one everyone learns how to use during a scuba diving lesson. This basic hand
sign is what many call a visual demand-response signal and in several different
ways during a scuba diving dive. One way this particular OK sign is commonly
used is to indicate that you are ready to scuba dive and that you will need to
lower the anchor. If you have reached the surface with the OK symbol the scuba
diver will then Lower anchors.
Another common use for
the OK symbol is when the scuba divers has encountered an opponent. At times
during a dive the OK sign can also be used as a visual warning to other divers,
so they may know that they may be in danger underwater. However the use of
underwater hand signals during a scuba diving dive should never come in contact
with your fellow divers. It is crucial that divers from all around the craft
stay very close together, especially when working with groups of more than two
people.
There are some basic
scuba diving hand signals which are essential in order to operate all of the
equipment that you need for scuba diving, or in order to get out of it if
something goes wrong. These basic underwater signals include: P indicates
"pee," This "top," and R is "red light." Also: B
is "back," S is "sit down," and U is "up." It is
essential that every scuba divers understand that these are not the only
underwater signals that must be known during a dive, but they are the basics
and should be learned first.
In order to have a more
comfortable diving experience, a scuba diving hand signals checklist is often
necessary for scuba divers who will be using their signals a lot. This should
contain all of the different underwater signals that are necessary, as well as
the ones that are considered unnecessary. Another great thing to do before
going into the water is to go through your scuba diving buddy's checklist, or
at least make a list of some of the things that you should know in advance. If
you don't know what a back log is, it is an item that will help you remember
what exactly you need to do underwater. It also makes it easier to spot things
when you are diving.
The scuba diving hand
signals that you will need in order to operate certain devices under the water
include the OK hand signal, ROK hand signal, and the stop or go signal. Each of
these signs will tell a diver whether they are able to proceed under water or
stop. The stop signal should only be used when you need to leave the area of
the dive and should be done quickly, as any delays will result in the scuba
diver having to come up to the surface again.
Some other types of
scuba diving hand signals include the up signal which is used to indicate that
a diver has entered the water and is now ready to leave the area, the down
signal which is used to indicate that the diver has turned around and is now
returning to the surface, and the continue or go signal which is used to
indicate that the divers wish to go further underwater and work on certain
maneuvers. Some divers will use the head gear signal, which is used to indicate
that a diver has died or gone missing, and the red mask signal which is used to
indicate that a diver is in difficulty. Once you have learned how to use all of
the various scuba diving hand signals, it really won't take long to get them
down. Just make sure that you are practicing with the proper equipment before
going into the water.
